HyperTerminal in Windows 7
Friday, 23. October 2009
I have talked to a lot of professionals and one of the big complaints about Windows 7 is the lack of HyperTerminal. So here is how to get HyperTerminal on to Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit).
On the Windows 7 box make a new folder under C:\Program Files\HyperTerminal for 32-bit and for 64-bit make a new folder C:\Program Files (x86)\HyperTerminal
From a Windows XP box and copy the following 3 files to the folder that was just created on the Windows 7 box:
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\hypertrm.exe
C:\WINODWS\system32\hypertrm.dll
C:\WINODWS\Help\hypertrm.chm
Now just run hypertrm.exe and HyperTerminal is on Windows 7.
If you want to have HyperTerminal on your Start Menu just create a shortcut to hypertrm.exe and put it inC:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and when you go to All Programs under the Start Menu HyperTerminal will be there.
The only issue that I have noticed is that when creating a connection the icons do not show, but in my opinion that is a non issue.
A quick side note if you have problems getting your USB to Serial connection working under Windows 7 try getting drivers from http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31. The PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v10518.zip worked great for me.
David Says:
Thanks for the info. Do you know what needs to be done to get a telnet session active. I tried to use that function thru command prompt and typing telnet and nothing happens . Is there a download to fix it. I was able to do it in Vista.
thanks,
David
Puneet Says:
Thanks..it worked.
Cindy Says:
This was perfect – really easy. Thanks so much. I’ve been trying to find a workaround for this since XP.
Marty Says:
You can download the files you need from this link:
http://toolbox.davisnet.com/downloads/Weather/Misc/Hyperterminal/
Hope this helps some….
Michael Says:
This is exactly what I needed! Thank you.
sve Says:
Thanks a lot, working like a charm
Ulf Says:
To also have the Icons correctly available in HypterTrm on Windows 7, you also need to copy hticons.dll from C:\WINDOWS\system32 to the Windows 7 program folder of hypterterminal
Trong que Says:
Thanks! good idea, … I looking it long time
Richard Gadsden Says:
@David there is a telnet client on Windows 7, it’s just not installed by default.
You can install it through the “Turn Windows Features on and off” screen.
Pankaj Goyal Says:
Just enable your telnet session from control panel, add /remove programs. For example :- Like enable or disable games.
tony Says:
Thanks…..
Hassan Says:
I am not unable to run hyper terminal, I have tried all the suggestions above, but when I run the “hypertrm.exe” I got the message “Windows can not find hypertrm.exe, make sure you type ….”when I run the “hypertrm.exe” by double clicking I got a box called “connection description” followed on the top written “new connection” and then asked me to enter a name and choose an icon for the connection, also the icons are not visibale
SN Malakar Says:
Thanks for the idea for using the Windows XP hyper terminal in the Windows 7 environment. It worked and the session was successful. However, The dial tone, ringback tone and the modem connection tone is not heard. Which makes me quite impassion. I would expect the remedy for this problem as well. Thanks again.
SN Malakar Says:
Next genuine problem is after completing the session I could not save the settings. Everytime I have to set the dial-up number, and other settings. What might be the solution. Thanks.
George Says:
Malakar in my case it works fine. The only thing that I have done which has ntot been mentioned above and I do not know if this solved the issue was that first I installed the Hyperterminal Private edition from the official site which gives you only 30 days. Then I have replaced the files HG30t.BAK, HG30t.dll and HyperTrm.exe from a windows xp pc. Now I can save the settings. The only minor issue which has been mentioned above is that I can see the icons of the save settings but this is a very minor issue.
xlr8n4d Says:
I don’t know what I did wrong, but I was not able to install the 64 bit edition to work on Windsows 7. Does anyone else have any ideas, has a patch changed things or something recently?
JoH Says:
Brian, you have helped me out a great deal with this option. And I was able to get it to work just fine on Windows 7 x64. It should be mentioned that I simply copy over the files that were in XP Mode OS (Note: it doesn’t work in XP Mode), and it worked as you outlined. Excellent!

I found these comments on another forum regarding additional functionality and squaring away your icons.
There are 2 other DLLs that should be included for full functionality, that most of the sites with articles about this neglect to mention.
C:Program FilesWindows NThtrn_jis.dll
C:WindowsSystem32hticons.dll
And if you want the help files, they are:
C:WINDOWSHelphypertrm.chm
C:WINDOWSHelphypertrm.hlp
Hope this helps

If you are trying to install this on Windows 2008 64 bit, you need to do the following:
Create a folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\HyperTerminal
Copy hypertrm.exe to the created folder.
Copy hypertrm.dll to C:\Windows\SysWOW64
If you copy the .dll to the system32 folder, you will get an error message about it missing the .dll file.

Loading the hypertrm.exe and .dll components from XP works as described, thank you for the information.
Be aware that certain USB -> COM port implementations such as FTDI are not persistent, and disappear when the hardware is unplugged. If you launch Hypertrm and the device is not connected, I only see the TCP/IP (Winsock) choice in the CONNECT USING drop down box.
